Happy New Year. To kick off 2010, this week’s choice for a Thursday evening restaurant visit was Speisekammer. Overall, Speisekammer receives a thumbs up with 4 stars and 4 hands for its more or less authentic German selection and enjoyable atmosphere and makes the list for places to return. Even the self-proclaimed “food snobs” make it their pick.
Indeed, if you’re looking for good German food, Speisekammer is the place to go. The menu lives up to the traditional German fare with all your favorites: Spätzle, Strudel, Wiener Schnitzel, Bratwurst, Dumplings, Sauerkraut, and of course traditional German beer. The dishes tend to be a bit on the rich side but it supposedly goes with the style. Its the one place you can count on that delicious hardy German bread only found in the mother land. Deserving of 4 stars for a higher-end restaurant.
Accessibility: Concerning universal access, it is wheel chair accessible as advertised, with generally open isle ways and no stairs. There is a universal placard with the standard tactile, large print and Braille indicators on the restrooms. The staff is helpful and accommodating too. While you aren’t likely to find an up-to-date menu in large print nor Braille, their website lists all the main selections (except for their drinks) in an easy-to-read fashion. So you’ll be set if you have your accessible phone or check the site selection before hand. Unfortunately, without your own car, getting there will be a challenge. Reportedly, handicap parking is available but be ware of the no U-turn signs. So all things considered, Speisekammer receives an accessibility rating of 4 hands.
