Religiously moistening the soil daily and patiently waiting for 21 days has rewarded us with my first home-grown portabella.  With a full rotation of the base, the stem came out nearly intact.  Being a fan of the portabella sandwiches, we cut the top in 4 pieces in order to fit the sesame buns from the BBQ and then sliced the stem into thin slices.
